What to do about blisters on feet

If you get a nasty little blister, be patient and as hard as it may be try to leave it be. It is recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology that you stop activities as the blister will heel in one to two weeks’ time.

Dermatologists recommend the following tips for you to prevent chafing which can lead to blisters:

1. Wear the right clothing. Moisture wicking, loose fitting during physical activity are best. Cottons that soak up moisture are best to be avoided as they can chafing and friction.

2. Protect your feet. Try to wear nylon or moisture-wicking socks. If one pair does not do the job wear two pairs!! Make sure that your shoes fit properly, they should not be too tight or too lose.

3. Soft bandages. For problem areas try to put on adhesive moleskin or soft bandages. Make sure they are applied to the directions.

4. Apply powder or petroleum jelly. This will help reduce friction when your skin rubs together or rubs against clothing materials.

5. Stop your activity immediately if you experience pain or discomfort, or if your skin turns red.

As your blister heals, watch for signs of infections. If you notice redness or puss call your local doctor or see your Foot Care Specialist. But in the meantime, dermatologists recommend you do the following to treat blisters on your own.

1. Loosely cover the blister with a bandage. Make sure to tent the bandage and give the blister space.

2. Use padding if you have a blister on the bottom of your feet. Cut the padding into a doughnut shape and place around the blister. Then cover with a size appropriate bandage.

3. Avoid pooping or draining your blister. If the blister is larger and painful use a sterile needle by using rubbing alcohol.

4. Do not remove the “roof” of the blister. Keep the area clean and covered. Always remember to wash your hands with soapy water and then apply petroleum jelly if needed.

We hope these great tips will help you in preventing getting blisters or help you deal with any you currently have.

Stay safe and stay active!
