How to Use Podo Expert Dry to Cracked Skin Foot Foam

Using Podo Expert Dry to Cracked Skin Foot Foam is a breeze. Here's a simple step-by-step guide:

Start with clean, dry feet. It's best to use the foam after a bath or shower when your skin is more receptive to moisture.

Shake the canister well to mix the foam.

Hold the canister upright and dispense a small amount of foam onto your hand.

Gently massage the foam onto the affected areas of your feet. Focus on areas with dry or cracked skin.

Allow the foam to absorb into your skin. It's non-greasy and absorbs quickly, so there's no need to worry about sticky residue.

For best results, use the foam daily, preferably in the morning and evening.

What Causes Tired and Achy Feet?

Before we dive into the self-care tips, it's essential to understand what causes tired and achy feet. The most common culprits include:

Extended standing or walking: Spending extended periods on your feet can lead to fatigue and discomfort. It puts excessive pressure on the muscles and joints in your feet, causing them to ache.

Wearing ill-fitting shoes: Shoes that are too tight or lack proper support can wreak havoc on your feet. They can cause blisters, bunions, and increase the likelihood of foot pain.

High-impact activities: Engaging in high-impact activities such as running or jumping can strain the muscles and ligaments in your feet, leaving them tired and sore.

Overexertion: Pushing your feet to their limits without giving them adequate rest can lead to fatigue and discomfort.

Self-Care Tips for Tired and Achy Feet

Now that we understand what causes tired and achy feet let's explore some self-care tips to alleviate the discomfort and rejuvenate your feet:

           1. Soak and Relax

One of the best ways to rejuvenate your feet is by soaking them in warm water. Add Epsom salt or a few drops of essential oils such as lavender or peppermint for an extra touch of relaxation. Soaking your feet not only helps relieve muscle tension but also promotes circulation.

           2. Massage and Roll

Massaging your feet can do wonders for tired and achy feet. Grab a tennis ball or a foot roller and place it on the floor. Roll your feet back and forth over it, applying gentle pressure. This helps to stretch and relax the muscles in your feet, providing instant relief.

           3. Stretch and Strengthen

Performing foot stretches and exercises can improve foot flexibility and strength. Try rolling a tennis ball under your foot, pointing and flexing your toes, and doing ankle rotations. These simple exercises can help reduce foot fatigue and prevent future discomfort.

           4. Elevate and Rest

Giving your feet a break is crucial in relieving fatigue and pain. Whenever possible, elevate your feet by propping them up on a pillow or cushion. This promotes blood flow and reduces swelling. Take frequent breaks throughout the day, especially if you've been on your feet for an extended period.

           5. Use Orthotic Inserts

If you find that your shoes lack sufficient support, consider using orthotic inserts. These inserts provide additional cushioning and arch support, which helps alleviate foot fatigue. They are available in various shapes and sizes to suit different foot types.

           6. Wear Comfortable Shoes

Investing in comfortable shoes is essential for foot health. Opt for shoes with proper arch support, a wide toe box, and cushioning. Avoid high heels or shoes with no support, as they can exacerbate foot pain and discomfort.

           7. Apply Heat or Cold

Applying heat or cold therapy to your feet can offer instant relief. Use a heated pad or warm towel to increase blood flow and relax your feet. Alternatively, you can use a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas to reduce inflammation and numb pain.

           8. Moisturize and Pamper

Don't forget to moisturize your feet regularly. Dry skin can lead to cracks and discomfort. Use a foot cream or lotion and massage it into your feet to keep them hydrated and healthy. Treat yourself to a DIY foot spa by soaking your feet in warm water infused with essential oils. Scrub off dead skin with a foot scrub and finish with a moisturizing massage.

Understanding the Role of a Foot Care Nurse

Before diving into the educational requirements, it's essential to understand what a foot care nurse does. Foot care nurses are registered nurses (RNs) or registered practical nurses (RPNs) who specialize in the assessment, treatment, and maintenance of foot health. They play a crucial role in preventing and managing foot-related issues, especially for patients with diabetes, arthritis, and other conditions affecting foot health.

Step 1: Become a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse

The first step in becoming a foot care nurse in Ontario is to obtain your RN or RPN designation. This involves completing a nursing program at an accredited institution and passing the NGN formerly NCLEX-RN or REx-PN formerly CPNRE exam. Once you're a licensed nurse, you can pursue specialization in foot care.

Step 2: Gain Clinical Nursing Experience

Before specializing, it's beneficial to gain experience in general nursing. This experience provides a solid foundation in patient care and hones your skills in various medical settings. However, this is not necessarily needed. You can enroll into a foot care course directly after obtaining your nursing license. We would recommend that you at least have one year of nursing experience but as mentioned before this is not necessary.

            Step 3:

Vitamin D - Are You Getting Enough?

Vitamin D comes from the sun but in the winter months if we live north we are often not exposed to the sun as much. Therefore we need to know, how much vitamin D we can take a day or how much sunlight we will need to obtain vitamin D. In this blog we will talk about the many roles vitamin D has in promoting good health. We’ll also go over the different forms of vitamin D and how vitamin D impacts or bones. Finally, I’ll give you three sources of this critical nutrient and how much we should get.

Like most vitamins, vitamin D has many functions in the body. It’s mostly known for its ability to help build strong bones. But, vitamin D is also important for a healthy immune system, digestive system, heart and mental health, blood sugar regulation, fertility, and resistance to cancer.

Vitamin D (calciferol) isn’t “active” in our bodies.

To do its wonders, it first needs to be converted into the active form. This is a two-step process. First the liver converts it into 25(OH)D (calcidiol). Then, that is converted into 1,25(OH)D (calcitriol) in the kidneys. It’s this third, calcitriol, form that’s active in the body.

Vitamin D acts like a hormone! That means it’s produced in one part of the body (e.g. the skin), and travels through to act on another part (e.g. the bones).

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, when you have more than enough, it gets stored in the liver, and isn’t flushed out in the urine like excesses of many other vitamins are.

FUN FACT: Fish liver oil contains vitamin D, but not fish oil - it’s the liver that stores vitamin D.

           Vitamin D for bones

Vitamin D is most known for its importance for bone health. Bones are alive and are constantly remodeling themselves. This means they, as all tissues, need a constant supply of nutrients.

How does vitamin D help your bones?

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium more efficiently.

And the mineral calcium is one of the major players to “mineralize” and strengthen our bones.

Vitamin D works with other hormones to ensure optimal levels of calcium in the blood. When it comes to calcium, the body always prioritizes the blood over the bones. This is because the blood transports calcium around the body for critical functions like contractions of the heart and muscles. This is why it’s more important to maintain the calcium levels in the blood over levels in the bone.

When there is enough calcium in the blood, any excess is stored in the bones. This is when the bones are mineralized and strengthened. When there isn’t enough calcium in the blood two things happen to raise this level. First, vitamin D stored in the liver is activated to help absorb more calcium from food. Second, the body removes calcium stored in the bones to raise levels in the blood.

When we don’t get enough vitamin D (and calcium) regularly,

bones can become weak and brittle.

In children, severe vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets, and in adults it can cause osteomalacia. With less severe vitamin D (and/or calcium) “insufficiency” (as opposed to a more severe “deficiency”), osteoporosis can develop over the long term.

Having enough 25(OH)D in the blood is associated with higher bone density. Studies show that supplementing with vitamin D may reduce the risk of falls and bone fractures.

There are three main sources of vitamin D - sun exposure, foods, and supplements.

Our skin contains “pre” vitamin D.

When exposed to UV rays from the sun,

this “previtamin” is converted into vitamin D (calciferol).

In fact, vitamin D levels decline in people throughout the winter.

The problem is that too much UV radiation can contribute not only to skin cancer, but also to dryness and other cosmetic changes in the skin over time.

Let’s look at how to get enough vitamin D from foods and supplements.

Sources of vitamin D - Foods

Vitamin D is not naturally found in very many foods

. The best sources include fatty fish and fish liver oils. Some is also found in beef liver, some cheeses, and egg yolks. Because these are animal sources, they are in the D3 form. Some is even already converted into 25(OH)D which is thought to be 5 times more potent than the regular D3 form.

Naturally occurring plant sources of vitamin D2 are some mushrooms that have been exposed to the sun. That’s about it.

Because it’s naturally found in so few foods, vitamin D is also added to certain foods. This is called “fortification.” In fact, fortified foods are the main source of dietary vitamin D in the US.

Fortification of food with vitamin D can improve vitamin D status.

Some of these vitamin D fortified foods include milk, some orange juices, breakfast cereals, and yogurt. Check your labels to find out if yours has been fortified with vitamin D (it will be listed as an ingredient). You can also check which form of vitamin D was added: D2 or D3.

Infant formulas in Canada and the US are required to have at least 40 IU of vitamin D for each 100 kcal.

FUN FACT: Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, absorption from foods, drinks, and supplements is improved when taken at the same time as a fat-containing meal.

Sources of vitamin D - Supplements

Vitamin D supplements come in both forms: D2 and D3

. The plant-based D2 form is manufactured by exposing yeast to UV radiation. The animal-based D3 form is made from lanolin.

If you are at risk for vitamin D deficiency, your health care provider can test your blood for levels of 25(OH)D and recommend a course of action specific for you.

However, if you don’t have a professional recommendation for how much vitamin D to take, the safest way to supplement is to follow the instructions on the label. And never take more than 4,000IU/day (100 mcg/day), unless told to by your licensed health care provider.

That’s because too much vitamin D can become toxic. One effect of too much vitamin D is that blood levels of calcium can get too high. This can lead to “calcification” which can damage blood vessels, the heart, and kidneys. Getting too much vitamin D is mostly a risk when taking supplements; not so much from sun exposure or food intake.

And don’t forget to check with your doctor and/or pharmacist if you’re taking medications because vitamin D supplements can interact with some of them.

How much vitamin D do we need?

For adequate blood levels of 25(OH)D, how much vitamin D do we need to get every day?

To get enough vitamin D from the sun, a general rule is to get about 5–30 minutes of sun between 10:00 a.m. & 3:00 p.m. at least twice a week to the face, arms, legs, or back without sunscreen.

When it comes to vitamin D from foods and supplements, in Canada and the US, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has set target daily amounts. This amount, called the “Recommended Dietary Allowance” (RDA), ensures that at least 97% of people get enough vitamin D every day. Those recommendations are:

10 mcg (400 IU) per day for infants under the age of one.

15 mcg (600 IU) per day for everyone aged 1-70 years old, including pregnant and lactating women.

20 mcg (800 IU) per day for everyone over the age of 70.

Vitamin D in foods and supplements may be measured in both mcg (micrograms) and/or IU (international units). The conversion factor is 40 IU = 1 mcg.

We can get vitamin D from sun exposure, some foods, and supplements.

The best way to know how much vitamin D you need is to have your blood tested if you’re at risk. If you don’t have a test or professional recommendation, following the label directions on your vitamin D supplements can be a safe way to get enough.

Believe it or not, as much as I preach about wearing supportive shoes. I started walking in old non-supportive sports shoes and quickly realized I needed to find a shoe that would support my feet. treat a wide variety of foot conditions as well as health issues and because I get back pain from standing or walking around while in my clinic or visiting patients in retirement homes, I decided to choose a shoe that catered to my specific needs. I liked the fact that their shoes have insoles that become molded by our body heat and creates a custom mold to cushion our heels. I knew I needed to buy a slip-on closed-toe shoe but I couldn’t resist and I bought two different pairs of their shoes to try.

Their shoe selection was pretty cute and I was in need of another ballerina flat to wear to work and to wear out this spring/summer if stores ever open up. So, I choose their

because of the wide toe box. I wanted a shoe that would not feel bulky with socks. Truthfully, I didn’t know what to expect with either of these shoes. I was just hoping they would fit because I have never ordered shoes online and I really didn’t want to return them. I ended up wearing the Kivi shoe out for many of my walks and this shoe was very comfortable. I don’t think this shoe is meant to be a walking shoe but it sure felt like one.

be patient and as hard as it may be try to leave it be. It is recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology that you stop activities as the blister will heel in one to two weeks’ time.

Dermatologists recommend the following tips for you to prevent chafing which can lead to blisters:

           1. Wear the right clothing. Moisture wicking, loose fitting during physical activity are best. Cottons that soak up moisture are best to be avoided as they can chafing and friction.

           2. Protect your feet. Try to wear nylon or moisture-wicking socks. If one pair does not do the job wear two pairs!! Make sure that your shoes fit properly, they should not be too tight or too lose.

           3. Soft bandages. For problem areas try to put on adhesive moleskin or soft bandages. Make sure they are applied to the directions.

           4. Apply powder or petroleum jelly. This will help reduce friction when your skin rubs together or rubs against clothing materials.

           5. Stop your activity immediately if you experience pain or discomfort, or if your skin turns red.

As your blister heals, watch for signs of infections. If you notice redness or puss call your local doctor or see your Foot Care Specialist. But in the meantime, dermatologists recommend you do the following to treat blisters on your own.

           1. Loosely cover the blister with a bandage. Make sure to tent the bandage and give the blister space.

           2. Use padding if you have a blister on the bottom of your feet. Cut the padding into a doughnut shape and place around the blister. Then cover with a size appropriate bandage.

           3. Avoid pooping or draining your blister. If the blister is larger and painful use a sterile needle by using rubbing alcohol.

           4. Do not remove the “roof” of the blister. Keep the area clean and covered. Always remember to wash your hands with soapy water and then apply petroleum jelly if needed.

We hope these great tips will help you in preventing getting blisters or help you deal with any you currently have.

Everyday things, such as using deodorant, soaps and harsh cleaning products can strip oils and fats from our skin. Taking long, hot showers can also dry your skin as well as certain medications . They can also play a part in the skin becoming excessively dry.

Wearing good shoes. Wearing tight shoes or high heels now and then for a night out won't cause lasting damage. But when you know you'll be on your feet most of the day, choose supportive, comfortable shoes.

Moisturize your feet. The skin of the feet tends to get thinner and drier with age; callused feet can crack and bleed, causing pain.

Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight affects your feet by putting greater force on them with each step.

As concerns about the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 increase, I wanted to personally reach out to update you on what we are doing to care for both our staff and patients during this time.

          Our plan is as follows:

To continue to provide in-clinic and house call visits. We will be conducting screening by phone prior to your appointment to determine the risk for COVID-19. If you have a scheduled visit in-home or in our clinic in the next coming weeks you may reschedule without being charged the cancellation/no-show fee if you decide not to have your foot care treatment. All patients that have fallen ill or travelled outside the country will have their appointment rescheduled in 14 days. We will also reschedule your appointment if you have come in contact with individuals who have fallen ill or travelled outside the country.

We are encouraging all patients who enter into our clinic to use the hand sanitizer found in the entranceway to the clinic prior to there appointment and to use the hand sanitizer after their appointment or wash their hands and follow best practices to protect the health and wellbeing of themselves, their family, and our community at large. Like always meticulous hand hygiene and cleaning will be conducted to the clinic work areas where foot care is provided post-treatment as well as to waiting areas, bathrooms or any other traffic areas to break the chain of infection. If foot care is provided in your home the nurse will also conduct meticulous hand hygiene and cleaning of her instruments post-care. Additionally, we believe in supporting all members of our team so should they become ill we are asking anyone who feels sick to take as much time off as they need to fully recover.

In addition to these steps, we will be monitoring the latest information including recommendations from the Government of Canada and World Health Organization and doing our part to stop the spread of this virus.

We will continue to keep an eye on the situation and make further adjustments to our action plan if and when necessary. The health and well-being of our patients, team, and community are of utmost importance to us and will continue to be our north star as we navigate the road ahead.

Using Nutritional Therapy to stop the progression of neuropathy

We are so excited to officially introduce a full spectrum diabetic neuropathy nutritional supplement that can stop the progression of diabetic neuropathy or reverse nerve damage to our practice!!! I was really trying my hardest to introduce this product to everyone last month as it was Diabetes Awareness but was unable to. So without further adeau may I please introduce to you Nutarniq Essentials!!! This supplement is a clinical-grade full-spectrum omega 3 nutritional supplement developed by Dr. Evan Lewis located here in Ontario Canada.

Dr. Lewis has developed a full spectrum omega 3 supplement that contains EPA, DPA, and DHA which are types of omega-3s necessary for nerve health.

Dr. Lewis ran a 12-month clinical

trial that demonstrated that seal oil, can stop the progression of neuropathy and also causes nerve regeneration.

         According to

          Medline Plus

, omega 3s are essential nutrients that cannot be produced by our bodies and must be sourced from food or supplements. Dr. Lewis’ diabetic neuropathy supplement contains all of the pro-nerve fats necessary for the maintenance of nerve health and can support nerve regeneration. It is also more absorbable compared to traditional fish omega-3s as it is absorbed under the tongue and in the digestive tract. As you can see below in Figure 1, Dr. Lewis’ Nutarniq Essentials out performs all other types of omega-3s for support health and especially nerve health for people with diabetes and neuropathy. As a result, the body does not receive the necessary building blocks from fish oil to repair nerves damaged by diabetes.

            Dr. Lewis’ clinical trial

showed that by supplementing with high doses of EPA, DPA, and DHA the body has the necessary essentials to repair nerve damage.

Sarah Ann’s Foot Care Services will offer the face to face clinical practice here in Barrie allowing foot care nurses to practice their new skills on volunteers in our “state of the art” clinical setting.

We are so happy to be able to collaborate with these nurses and to be able to deliver a program like this to our peers as we have seen over the years nurses desiring further knowledge and skills. This course has been designed to help nurses achieve nursing foot care excellence.

This blog is about nursing foot care and what that entails. People often ask me "what is nursing foot care" so I thought I would go into greater detail as to what nursing foot care is all about. Nursing foot care is non invasive medical treatments. It is not your typical pedicure that you would receive from a nail salon. It is preventative treatments, health promotion and health teaching. Foot care nurses are Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses who have taken specific post graduate classes related to foot care. Foot care nurses have the education to assess and treat patients that have lower limb and foot issues as well as to those who do not. Nurses are given the skills to properly care for patients and to refer to other multidisciplinary members if issues arise out of their scope of practice. Nurses provide lower limb assessments,

Foot care treatments are covered by most extended medical insurances and are also tax deductible for those who do not have insurance. Foot care nurses usually provide patients with receipts for the treatment they provide.

Foot care nurses provide care to patients in a variety of settings such as in the comfort of an individuals home, clinics, medical doctors offices, private practices, retirement homes, senior centers, nursing homes and recreation centers.

We offer our treatments at various locations as mentioned above and also in our clinic. If you or someone you know is in need of a foot care nurse for treatment give us a call. We would be happy to assist you.
